Website Cost in Kenya (2026): What You Should Budget

"How much does a website cost in Kenya?" is the first question almost every business owner asks us, and the honest answer is: it depends on what the website has to do. This guide breaks down website cost in Kenya in 2026, from a simple company profile site to a full online shop, so you can budget with confidence, compare quotes fairly and avoid paying twice.

Website cost in Kenya at a glance (2026)

Prices across Nairobi vary widely because agencies, freelancers and DIY builders are selling very different things under the same word, "website". These are typical ranges we see in the market for professionally built sites:

  • Simple business website (5–8 pages): roughly KES 40,000 to KES 120,000.
  • Custom business website (10–20 pages, blog, SEO setup): roughly KES 120,000 to KES 300,000.
  • E-commerce website with M-Pesa checkout: roughly KES 150,000 to KES 500,000+.
  • Web application or portal (bookings, dashboards, member areas): usually from KES 300,000 upwards, priced on scope.

On top of the build you will pay running costs: a .co.ke domain (around KES 1,000–1,800 a year), hosting (from a few thousand shillings a year for small sites) and, ideally, a maintenance plan. We explain each of these below.

What actually drives the price of a website

Two websites can both have "five pages" and still be KES 200,000 apart. These are the factors that move the number:

1. Custom design versus a template

A bought template is quick and cheap, but it looks like everyone else's site and often carries heavy code that slows it down. A custom design is planned around your customers and your brand. We compared the two in detail in template or custom website development.

2. Number of page types, not just pages

Ten blog posts are one page type. A home page, a service page, a case study and a contact page are four different designs. Each new page type adds design and development time.

3. Features and integrations

Booking calendars, M-Pesa payments, customer accounts, CRM connections and multi-language content all add cost because they need building, testing and securing. A Lipa na M-Pesa checkout, for example, needs Daraja API setup and careful error handling; see our M-Pesa payment integration guide.

4. Content and copywriting

Many projects stall because the text and photos are not ready. If you need copywriting, product photography or illustrations, budget for them separately or ask your agency to include them.

5. SEO and speed foundations

A site that loads slowly on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data will lose visitors before they read a word. Proper image optimisation, clean code, meta titles, structured data and a sitemap take time, but they are what make the site findable on Google.

Typical packages and what you should get for the money

Starter business website

Best for new businesses, consultants and professionals who need credibility online. Expect a home page, about, services, contact with a form and WhatsApp button, Google Business Profile link and basic on-page SEO. A good starter site should still be mobile-first, fast and editable by you.

Growth business website

Best for established SMEs that want leads from Google. Expect custom design, individual service pages, case studies, a blog, analytics, conversion tracking and a structured SEO setup. This is where most of our business website development projects sit.

Online shop

Best for retailers and brands selling directly. Expect product catalogue, cart, M-Pesa and card payments, delivery options, order emails and a dashboard for stock. Platform choice (WooCommerce, Shopify or custom) changes the long-term cost; we compare them in Shopify vs WooCommerce in Kenya.

Web application

Best when the website is the service: booking systems, learning platforms, client portals. These are quoted after a discovery workshop because the scope is unique. Our web application development page explains how we scope them.

The running costs most quotes leave out

  • Domain name: .co.ke or .com renewal every year. Read our .co.ke domain registration guide.
  • Hosting: shared hosting is fine for small sites; busy shops need faster plans. See how to choose web hosting in Kenya.
  • Business email: often bundled with hosting, or via Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups, security monitoring and small edits, typically KES 5,000–20,000 a month depending on the site.
  • Marketing: SEO, Google Ads or social media to bring visitors.

How to compare website quotes fairly

When you collect three quotes, put them side by side and check:

  1. Is the design custom or a template?
  2. How many page types and revisions are included?
  3. Who writes the content and supplies images?
  4. Are SEO setup, speed optimisation and analytics included?
  5. Do you own the domain, hosting account and code at the end?
  6. What support do you get after launch, and for how long?

The cheapest quote often becomes the most expensive when you have to rebuild after a year. Ownership is the big one: always insist that the domain and hosting are registered in your business name.

How to keep your website budget under control

  • Write a clear brief before you ask for quotes, and read how to choose a web design company in Kenya.
  • Launch with the pages that bring revenue first, then add the rest in phase two.
  • Prepare your content early so the project does not stall.
  • Choose a platform your team can edit without calling a developer for every change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a website for KES 10,000 in Kenya?

You can get a basic template site at that price, often built on a free theme with limited support. It can work for a temporary presence, but expect to rebuild when you need leads, speed or e-commerce.

How long does it take to build a website?

A business website typically takes 3–6 weeks once content is ready. Online shops and web applications usually take 6–12 weeks.

Do I pay everything upfront?

Most agencies, including Venda Technologies, work with a deposit to start and the balance at launch, with larger projects split into milestones.
