Client Overview

Afritales and Artistry is a unique storytelling agency with a powerful mission: to sensitize society about the deaf community through engaging, creative, and impactful stories. By using various forms of artistic expression, they aim to raise awareness and foster inclusivity for the deaf community across Africa and beyond. Their work touches on themes of identity, communication, and breaking barriers in society.

Project Scope

Afritales and Artistry approached Venda Technologies with the need for a website that would serve as their primary digital platform. The website’s main goal was to provide a space where their stories, initiatives, and advocacy efforts could reach a broader audience. It needed to effectively communicate their mission, showcase their artistic works, and provide resources for those looking to support or learn more about the deaf community.

Challenges

  • Accessibility: Since Afritales and Artistry serves a diverse audience, including people from the deaf community, the website had to prioritize accessibility features like video captions, transcripts, and visual cues.
  • Storytelling Focus: The website had to reflect their core purpose—storytelling. This meant designing a visually captivating yet simple user interface that allowed their content to take center stage.
  • Community Engagement: It was important to create interactive elements that would engage users and invite them to participate in advocacy efforts, support the cause, or contribute stories.

Design Process

1. Research and Discovery

We started by holding in-depth discussions with the Afritales team to fully understand their mission, target audience, and content style. We also researched how best to implement accessibility features for the deaf community to ensure an inclusive user experience.

2. Design and User Experience

For Afritales, storytelling was the focal point, so the website needed a design that supported narrative-based content. We opted for a clean, visually compelling design with large visuals, bold typography, and easy-to-navigate sections. The interface emphasized storytelling through:

  • Multimedia Integration: We designed the website to showcase videos, artwork, and written stories in a visually engaging manner.
  • Accessibility Features: The website includes transcripts for all video content, as well as options for high-contrast viewing modes and intuitive navigation for both hearing and non-hearing users.

3. Development

Our development team focused on creating a responsive and highly accessible website. Key features include:

  • Story Showcase: We created dedicated sections for the latest stories, categorized into different genres and topics, making it easy for visitors to find relevant content.
  • Advocacy and Resources Section: We developed a section for users to learn about the deaf community and ways to get involved, including advocacy resources and sign language learning materials.
  • Interactive Features: We added a submission form where users can contribute their own stories or support Afritales’ cause, fostering community engagement.

4. Testing and Launch

We rigorously tested the website across various devices and screen readers to ensure it met accessibility standards. The client provided feedback during multiple phases, and we made refinements to the user interface, ensuring a seamless and inclusive experience.

Results

  • Improved Visibility: Afritales and Artistry now has a professional, accessible platform that effectively communicates their mission and stories to a global audience.
  • Engagement: The website provides several touchpoints for users to engage with the agency’s content, including story submissions, advocacy efforts, and opportunities to support their initiatives.
  • Inclusive Design: With features like video captions, high contrast modes, and accessible navigation, the website ensures that users from both the deaf and hearing communities can equally enjoy and interact with the content.
